National Historic Shisps launch 2012 Volunteer Awards - £1,000 and £500 - closing date 31 July 2012
National Historic Ships UK, the official voice for historic vessels in the United Kingdom, and the Marsh Christian Trust have announced the launch of the 2012 Marsh Volunteer Awards, recognising outstanding volunteers in the conservation or operation of historic vessels in the UK.
Saturn to carry the Olympic Flame over Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
The restored Shropshire Union Fly-boat Saturn will carry the runner bearing the Olympic Torch over the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the Llangollen Canal on the morning of Wednesday 30 May 2012. Timing is likely to be 09.10 at Trevor Basin. Volunteer members of the Shropshire Union Fly-boat Restoration Society will bow-haul the boat over the Aqueduct as they did at the 200th Anniversary celebration of this World Heritage Site .
National Historic Ships - £1,000 prize in Photo Competition 2012
After a successful second year for the photo competition, National Historic Ships UK has decided to run it again in 2012 in partnership with Classic Boat magazine. With thanks to support from sponsors, including the International Boatbuilding Training College (IBTC) in Lowestoft and the artist, Claudia Myatt, they can even more great prizes to be won. Change of name for the Club
At its AGM on March 3rd, the Historic Narrow Boat Owners Club voted overwhelmingly to change its name to the Historic Narrow Boat Club. The requirement that members be owners of an historic craft was removed a few years ago, and the name now reflects this.
HNBC was founded in 1966 as The Narrow Boat Owners Club - at a time when nearly all narrow boats on the system were ex-working boats, and their needs were frequently overlooked in an era of leisure boats dominated by small cruisers. In 1989 the word Historic was added, as more and more modern narrow boats were being built.
